The smell of food

The guy in the picture is making kettle corn. It had a nice smell and I saw people eating big bags of the kettle corn at the dog parade in New Smyrna Beach. There are certain places around town where the smell of food is overpowering. The Breakers restaurant on the North end of the beach has a delicious smell of grilled hamburger. I fight temptation leaving to go home when I am park across the street. Also driving past Publix on the beachside, I can smell the odor of deep fried chicken. Publix has a certain odor of chicken fat or grease smell which is sometimes appealing to me as I drive home. On State Road 44 beachside there is a restaurant called "The Garlic." This restaurant has a very powerful smell of garlic which bowls me over when I am sitting in traffic. I went once to "The Garlic" and was not overly impressed. It was kind of a trendy young crowd Italian want a be type place which wasn't really to my liking. I guess I was spoiled with Vincenzo's which was more like my own home cooking. I still haven't brought myself to try the new burrito place which took over the spot where Vincenzo's use to operate. I don't find much in the way of seafood smells around here. We have a few restaurants, but no seafood odors. Shells closed here and left an abandoned building. We have The Boston fishhouse which is a deep fried overpriced fish and onion rings restaurant. I use the term restaurant loosely because when I ate there and the place had more of a McDonald's feel about the atmosphere. The tables were more like the benches you would see at an outdoors behind the McDonald's building. The onion rings are plentiful and just looking at them will give you a cholesterol high. Can you say Supersize me? Last night's dinner at my house was stuffed bell peppers. I enjoyed it very much and didn't even have to tip the waitress.

There was a street festival in Ocoee a few months ago. Mary and I went. I wanted to see a performance of the Japanese drums group. While there, I saw a place with kettle korn. And you are right, it smelled good. I had never had kettle korn and decided to try some. I couldn’t understand what all of the fuss was about over it. It just looked like ordinary popcorn to me. They put some sugar into the cooking oil which caramelizes and puts a light sweet coating onto the popcorn much like Cracker Jacks but only lighter. It was pretty good and I enjoyed it. The sweetness of the caramel coating keeps making you want to take one more handful, which I did. I like street festival food vendors because it is the only place where you can get all of these unusual and tasty foods. This is why I was disappointed at the Mt. Dora arts festival last year because of the outrageous prices that they were charging for the food. Plus they charged to attend the arts festival. Plus they charged for parking. Plus this and plus that, it has just become too expensive at the Mt. Dora arts festival. Tonight we are having Jamaican patties and spanish rice for supper tonight.
Do you remember a chain of fast food called Royal Castle? They use to vent the fumes from their grill out the front of the restaurant so that passersby could smell the hamburgers and onions cooking. The smell would say “come and get me” and quite often I would turn and go in and get a couple of their 15 cents hamburgers and an iced mug of birch beer.
Today is grocery shopping at Walmart. We prefer to go on the weekend because the crowds are smaller. Also we will drop off some DVD’s at the library. The library has a drive-up window which reminds me of McDonald’s drive-thru. Friday I took six DVD’s back to the library and used the drive-up window. The girl asked me if I wanted a receipt and I said no. I never bother with getting a receipt that I had returned them. I got an email notice later in the day that the DVD’s due date was coming. I waited until Saturday and checked my account which showed that I hadn’t returned them. I went to the library and told them of the problem. A young man had to search for about a half hour through all of the returned DVD’s and found five of them. Evidently the girl at the drive-up window had not scanned them as having been returned. They believed me on the sixth DVD which they could not find and cleared my account. From now on starting today I will get a receipt of the items when I return them. Have a nice day. It should be pleasant this afternoon. A good day for taking pictures at the beach. Lew
