The day before my birthday

I am up with the coffee. I had to get another piece of raisin bread, because the one I had kind of fell apart. I popped two pieces of raisin bread into the toaster and I hope it doesn't over cook it. I like toast, but not burned toast. I need to mention a cute little boxer turtle took up residence next door in a hole under a palm tree. I have seen the hole and I have seen the turtle digging in the dirt from a distance. I haven't really looked at the turtle up close. I think it is the same one which headed up in the neighbor's yard across the street. This turtle I only looked at and went home. The neighbor girl came out and said " How adorable." The talk on our street is the turtle came from down the road at the development place. It was there a bunch of turtles got killed all in the name of progress. I like this turtle next door, because it reminds me of the movie "Far and Away" where immigrants declared free land as their own. I view this turtle along the same lines. It is care free and digs the dirt like it owned the dirt with no predators. I don't even think the next door neighbor knows about it. Mom and I don't plan to tell him either. This gives the turtle the best chance to be undisturbed. I have been getting a few nice birthday cards. One e-card from my friends Mary and Lew and one e-card from my friend Lillian. One birthday phone wish from my former boss Georgia. One birthday card from my former co-worker Dick and a couple of nice birthday cards from my sister Glendon. I found out from mom that, Berry the dog, goes in for surgery on Tuesday. I got to show off the homemade videos of Holly to my neighbor Pauline. I accidentally broke a sprinkler head by stepping on it yesterday while trimming a bush back around the air conditioning unit. I also trimmed a eucalyptus tree in the back yard. I like this type of yard work, but I felt energy drained afterwards. Today is the Belmont and I didn't place a bet. I still figure that Big Brown will ace the Triple Crown. This is also the day when my buddy Hillary officially leaves the race for President. She will throw her support behind the other candidate. The day before my birthday seems pretty unique.

Folgers coffee as usual? I drink the Maxwell House instant myself. It is amazing how conditioned a person can become. I actually prefer the instant over fresh perked. I know, people find that incredible to believe. But I also like lots of milk and sugar in my coffee. Now days it is non-dairy coffee creamer and Splenda. This morning Mary made fried eggs (over easy, and truly over easy), one strip of bacon, and hash potatoes O'Brien made from scratch. Plus raisin toast. Raisin toast is risky because the raisins have a tendency to burn and give the toast a bitter taste. I prefer the cinnamon swirl bread without the raisins. The cinnamon cranberry bread is pretty good also.
Box turtle. We had one in the back yard. In fact right in the middle of the back yard. It had a large hole going down at an angle. We would put lettuce and other vegetables by the hole for it to eat. The digging was probably pretty easy for the turtle because the soil is sugar sand and is real loose. Then came hurricane Charlie and flooded the back yard. Unknown to me the tunnel must have collapsed (sugar sand) during the storm because after the storm we never saw the turtle again. So I am a little jealous that you have a turtle to watch and I don't. Do you try watching it with your telescope? How about posting a picture of your telescope? I like animals and am fascinated at how they are able to survive in the wild. I meen, there really isn't much for a turtle to eat in the backyard except grass and some plants. Nothing that I would find particularly appetizing. Maybe a little lettuce next to the hole will get the turtle to stay. Is the yard fenced? Would you be able to place a small piece of lettuce each day a little bit closer to your backyard so that the turtle will follow the trail and get use to coming into your back yard and possible make a home there. Food for thought (pardon the pun). I wish that I could have gotten one of those turtles from the construction site and put it in the backyard since they were doomed anyway. I went to the butterfly encounter yesterday and talked to an older employee who looked like he had been there for a long time and semmed quite knowledgeable. I asked him about attracting hummingbirds to the backyard. He suggested certain flowers. Not wanting to do that, I asked him if a hummingbird feeder would attract them to the back yard. He said that he had one but never saw a hummingbird drinking from it. He said that the hummingbirds in his yard seemed to prefer the nectar of the flowers. Are you going to Glendon's for your birthday tomorrow? Hopefully she will bake a large cake. The cake mixes in the box have gotten smaller in recent times and you need two of them to get a large cake like in the old days. Cream cheese frosting is the best. Have a great birthday tomorrow. It's your day and you get to do whatever you want. How about Chinese takeout at Glendon's with a large red velvet cake for dessert and a movie in Williston. Followed by a return to the house, a cup of cherry cordial coffee and another slice of cake. Sound good? You bet. Sounds good to me too. Have a great birthday and stay cool tomorrow in the pool. Have I dropped enough hints? Lew
