Middle of the Week (Wednesday)

How many ways can you wish to get rich? There is the Lottery. Pick six numbers right and get millions of dollars. There is Play Five. Play Five numbers and get thousands of dollars. There is Scratch off tickets. If you are luck, you can win 10 dollars. There is dog racing which I never have played and would be sure not to win any money. How about Horse Racing? Do I place money down on the favorite for the Triple Crown? I heard from my sister that he has a hairline fracture on his front hoof. This is not good news for Big Brown or the people who would want to bet on him. I decided to research it a bit more before making the decision to gamble money away. I would like a reasonable good chance of winning. I bet on another favorite awhile back and he had to be put down. He busted his legs and the Vets tried to save him, but infection set in and he was gone. My friend Lillian is back from Delaware not knowing if she will marry her boyfriend or not. She returns to work today and probably will be greeted by a lot of assignments to get done with deadlines to meet and pressure to endure. My sister's baby chickens are about grown up. They are about to be introduced to the adult chicken group. Plus, hopefully Berry the dog will come back today.

Gambling. Let me tell you a true gambling story. I was in Las Vegas playing my favorite game roulette. I like that game because if you play the colors red or black you have almost a 50/50 chance of winning. Due to the zeros, the odds are tipped slightly in favor of the casino. I was playing 10 cent roulette. Yep, the minimum bet was only 10 cents. You probably won't find that anymore. Over the course of nearly an hour I was $ 20 ahead. Now at ten cent roulette that means a lot of spins and a lot of wins. I was tired. I got up from the table with $ 20 in chips. I was on my way out when I figured, "What the heck, double or nothing." I had been winning a lot so I felt good about my chances. I went to a different roulette table and I put the whole $ 20 on red. If I won I would have $ 40. If I won I would be an additional $ 20 ahead in a matter of a minute whereas it had taken me nearly an hour to get $ 20 ahead before at 10 cents a spin. The wheel spun and I held my breath. Yeah, black came up and my $ 20 was gone in an instant. But since that $ 20 was money that I was ahead on I figured that I was really breaking even. Can you top that story? Well, I can. My mother, God rest her soul, passed away. She left me $ 10,000. I went to a yuppie stock broker and told him that I would like to invest the money but in something very safe. I didn't want to lose the money. He told me that the safer an investment is, the less that you make on it. I told him that I didn't care, that "safe" was most important to me. He said that he would put it into government securities which were very safe and had no risk to them. About one month later Black Monday hit. A mini stock market crash. I lost $ 3,000 in one day. Evidently where he invested the money did have risks. I took my licks and got out of the market with a $ 3,000 loss. So I hope that you have much better luck at gambling than I do. When do you get to return to work? Lillian needs her lunch buddy. Tonight Mary made a fancy pasta dish with wine and chopped red bell pepper and asparagus. It was good. We also had some garlic bread sticks. I still get up each morning around 5:00 to study. This morning I was up a little early (4:50 am). I have my coffe and toast to start the morning off. The dog keeps me company while I am studying. I study on my laptop which is set up on the dining room table. The dog likes to lie on a chair near me. Being a chihuahua he is not able to jump up directly onto the chair. So I have a cardboar box that I put next to the chair and he jumps first onto the box and then onto the chair. He seems to look forward to it. Gotta go. Have a great day. Lew
