Home for the garbage

This is the Samsula landfill located on State Road 415. We passed this spot on the way home from Orlando,Florida. Fortunately, there was no overpowering odor. It must have been still outside and the only wind was from the movement of the car. I believe this is where our garbage goes because it is the closest landfill to where I live. It also seems to be one of the most clean from the outside looking in. There have been days in the past when the smell from the landfill was so overpowering. Even with the air conditioning, the smell would penetrate into the pickup truck I was driving. It took awhile to get the smell completely gone. I wonder how the workers can stand the smell? Does there sense of smell disappear from working there? How about the people who live around the landfill are there days when they can not stand the smell?

Mt. Rushmore. The name was distorted to Mt. Trasmore in Miami because the sanitary landfill is the highest point in the county. It is so high that you can see it from miles away. How do the employess hold up to the smell? I know that the smell is terrible but they don't seem to be bothered by it. I guess that they must get use to it. But the dust from the dumping of all that garbage and the from the bulldozers pushing all of that garbage around. They have a car wash guy come out once a week to wash all of the employees cars. I didn't care much for the gunshots either. Yeah, that's right, gunshots. They have these tubes set up around the sides of the land fill and they are loaded with blank shotgun-type shells. They are shot off periodically so that the noise will scare the birds away. It seems to work but it always startled me. I don't know why they didn't want the birds eating the garbage. Perhaps someday they will be digging up the old landfills to recycle the scrap metal. Take care. Lew
