Starting a new adventure
Mom and I discovered La Quinta Inn Aka: Holiday House. There were other people like Harlan and Luz who also discovered where it was located. Mom and I seem to arrive early, so we were able to locate where the bathrooms were in the hotel. Mom talked with the waitress once the place opened to find out where our tables for Lillian's farewell party were located. I know there were at least 26 people there. They allowed for 28 , but two people were not there due to illness. This is a picture of Lillian in her print sunflower shirt along with Phaedra Harden, a co-worker. Lillian got a engraved business card holder for her 25 years of service. She was extremely gracious on receiving gifts from Joe, her boss, and from other people. She gave a short little" I was glad to work here speech" which I don't think got much attention from the audience. Most people were visiting with each other and enjoying the food. Mom had the lamb which she liked. She also liked the instant mashed potatoes. She didn't get the mint jelly, because I did. I got the turkey with the dressing. The server gave me two slices of white meat which I thought were a little dry. I had plenty of gravy on the instant potatoes. I am just spoiled by the real potatoes. I was good about not touching the sugar desserts. I asked the waitress if they had sugar free desserts, but the waitress said" they did not have it. " I didn't even have a bit of Lillian's farewell cake. I did take a picture which I can drool over, when I have a desire for a rich sinful cake.

"You're a better man than I Gunga Din" as the famous quote goes. The expression describes your willpower and the cake. You held firm and didn't have a piece whereas I succumbed to temptation and had a piece. Thus, you're a better man than I Gunga Din. I like that expression and in particular the character who played the role of Gunga Din in the movie named Gunga Din. It is an old movie and in black and white. But that likeable character Gunga Din. Only recently did I find out from Wikipedia what actor played the role of Gunga Din in that movie. It was Sam Jaffe. I was stunned. After all, I only remember Sam Jaffe as a white haired and wild haired Albert Einstein type of character. I remember him first from the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still where he played the role of a professor. He had the Albert Einstein look in that picture. Then came a TV series called Ben Casey that was about a neurosurgeon which was played by Vince Edwards. Sam Jaffe played a senior member of the doctor teaching staff. In this series, Sam Jaffe's appearance was once again that of the Albert Einstein type. So to see Sam Jaffe as a young man made it difficult for me to recognize him, but his voice gave him away.
I didn't see you coming around taking pictures. But I was probably chowing down on the food. Did you mom find the lamb a little tough? I found mine to be a little tough. And yes, I noticed right off that the potatoes were instant but a more than generous helping of gravy made them taste good. I should have been a "saucier" in French cooking because I like gravies so much. Mary will tell you that if gravy is available, I will drown my food in it. I guess that the expression "Why not have a little food with your gravy" would apply to me. I picked this up from my mom who loved to take buttered bread and sop up the gravy on the plate with it. I still do that to this day. And the white meat of chicken and turkey is always a little dry. The solution? You guessed it, drown it in gravy to moisten it. Works every time. And don't forget the buttered bread to sop up the leftover gravy on the plate. After all, "waste not, want not" as the expression goes. Try to stay cool day today. I am switching my outdoor activities from afternoon to morning when it is cooler. Tuesday, Mary and I are going to the movies at West Oaks mall but this time we are going to have lunch at the food court there (bring on the Chinese food). Plus Mary got a coupon on-line for a free small bag of popcorn at the movies. Just keeping busy with a little something each day. This morning I took the time off from studying to read some articles about D.B. Cooper. This was the guy who skyjacked a plane and then jumped out of the plane with the money and was never found. There is a great movie on this starring Treat Williams called The Ballad of D.B. Cooper. Anyway, Gunga Din (meant in a nice way), have a nice day and enjoy the week-end. Lew
