Improving local drainage systems

With all the rain, I hope it clicked with the top officials that water drainage needs to be improved. The flooding featured in Daytona, Holly Hill and New Smyrna due to low line areas needs better design to let water run off into retention ponds . Deeper gullies and underground storm drains should be top priority to carry water away. Stimulus money could be used in this direction versus a six lane road on State Road 434. Along with roof repairs, should we as citizens look after those whose houses face potential damage from flooding? Plus, the cars that get stuck in roads covered with water. Plus, reducing the health hazard from backed up sewage drains and creatures like snakes showing up where they don't belong. It isn't even June yet, but let us see if the state officials pick up on this issue.

What use to be shark bite capital now seems to be rain capital. With all of this rain you could end up having the ocean's waves lapping at your front yard. LOL. I see people out walking barefoot in that water which is really a bacterial soup. They should require that low lying areas be built up with fill dirt or sand before building the houses. I use to watch these people who had a house built on the edge of a lake here in Orlando complaing because the flooding caused the lake to rise and now there is water in their house. Why build a house close to the waters edge to begin with? It is similar to people who build homes at the edge of the airport and then complain about the noise of the jets. But I fault the officials who gave approval for building homes in these areas. What a mess it must be for the flooded homes. All of the water damage to the sheetrock and wooden studs, the silt laden soaked carpets, the mold on the walls. After hurricnae Andrew, these were common problems, especially the mold. We personally knew a couple who had lost their entire roof during the hurricane and remained huddled in a closet looking up at the sky. Because of the mold they had to completely gut the interior their home including the walls. When they allow homes to be built in low areas prone to flooding, the resulting insurance claims by the homeowners cause all of our insurance premiums to go up. I was paying a fortune in annual premiums for house insurance in Miami. It just seems irresponsible to me to build homes in a flood area without taking proper precautions to protect the home. Perhaps all homes should be built in the shape of an Ark. Did Villager write this blog? Don't look now but I think that more rain is coming your way. Keep your umbrellas handy. Lew
